Hey there,

I'm Karmen

Introductions have always been a little uncomfortable for me.  But I really do believe that you should have a good idea of who you are hiring as your photographer.  Because good chemistry and aligned goals can really take the creative process to a whole new level.  So  let’s give it a go.

I have been a working photographer based out of Central Alberta for the last 14 years, starting in the first year of my Photographic Technology Diploma.  Throughout my career I have been so fortunate to work in many areas of photography; everything from film to digital, from weddings to commercial shoots to editorials and traveling for photojournalism assignments.

And no matter where my job took me the parts I always felt the most drawn to, the thing that always left me feeling energized and excited was creating portraits.  Especially portraits that showcased the power, nuance and magic of femininity.

As a mother of two daughters, the eldest of 7 sisters and raised primarily by a single mother I have spent my entire life bearing witness to the absolute strength and raw beauty of women and femme identifying individuals, while simultaneously being frustrated by the narrow beauty standards and single faceted portrayals of women within media.

I wanted to do something different. Something that would honour and celebrate how complex and resilient women are.  And most of all, I wanted to hold up a mirror, in hopes that every woman in my life might catch a glimpse of just how incredible they are.  Because, let’s face it.  We are so damn hard on ourselves.

And in turn, every women that I photograph inspires me in new ways.

The act of co-creation, healing a little piece of me every single time.  And expanding my understanding of what it means to be a women and to be an artist.
